i'm Addicted to netflix.
Hannah Benson'15
I have been subscribed to Netflix for about three weeks and two days- or in Netflix time about two seasons of New Girl, and I can confidently say that the program is both running and ruining my life. I promise that if I still didn’t see the words “next episode playing in 15 seconds” numerous times every night then my priorities would be in tact. Alas, Netflix knows how to draw the user in by playing the next episode in a series prior to the user being able to escape the Netflix vortex.
Netflix is the world’s leading Internet television network with over forty-four million users, and frankly it is not hard to see why. My original plan was to precariously peek my head into the widespread phenomenon using the “thirty-day free trial,” then before the system could charge my account, I planned to quickly withdraw and move on with my life of regularly scheduled television-watching habits. But within an hour of being an official Netflix user, or “flixxie” as some critics are calling it, I had dipped my toes into countless movies I had forgotten about, TV series I never able to finish, and concerts I had heard great things about and never even knew I could watch online. The truth lies in the fact that Netflix has just about anything you could look for just a click away, and who could possibly turn that down?
Despite the fact that a monthly Netflix subscription gives you unlimited hours of television for just seven dollars, many folks outside the Netflix realm are unaware of the many other perks that come with subscription. A personal favorite feature of Netflix is the site’s ability to recommend shows for me, based off of the ones I already watch. The recommendation system chooses similar films or shows which are based off of the films I and other users have watched. More often than not, I find myself enjoying these recommended programs more than the ones I had been watching in the first place. Netflix also lets a person add many more users to an account so that they can watch shows at the same time as another family member or friend. In fact, I’m not ashamed of the fact that I have been planning a settlement with 6 other friends to create a group account and all split the fee per month, just to enjoy our favorite shows and movies for even less.
For some readers numbers are more powerful than words, and for these statistic hungry readers I present to you some Netflix approving statistics. These statistics generated by Netflix, say a lot about the online program and how many users are obsessed like myself. For instance, in the United States alone, there are 33.4 million users of Netflix, and these American viewers, by themselves, were recorded to have watched approximately 1.9 billion hours of television. In addition to accuracy, in facts there is comfort, and this last fact gave me some peace of mind to know that I was not alone. Experts report that a little over 61% of Netflix viewers claim to “binge-watch” shows and other programs. I was glad to know that I wasn’t the only one to do something like knock out 2 whole seasons of Gossip Girl in one week.
When you have what seems like the entire world of television entertainment at your fingertips, it’s hard to hold back. Without acknowledging the fact that it obviously stunts productivity, critics haven’t given us viewers any reason why Netflix is any kind of hindrance to our health. So by all means, pick a show and watch on. You’ll be glad you did.
