Young Energy
Haley Driscoll'14
With spring sports just around the corner and warmer weather hopefully approaching the question for the upcoming season is what the teams are going to look like when they suit up for games in late March and early April. Teams are not set yet as tryouts will begin on March 24. The tryouts will give opportunities for all athletes to take the field and show to the coaches what they have to offer.
Like many other teams, the boys’ baseball team lost prominent seniors last year leaving only four seniors on the team this year and causing many underclassmen to step into key roles. With no doubt the baseball team will be young, but that does not mean they will struggle. When asked about the upcoming season senior Harry Lanuza stated, “We are very young, but have a lot of promise!”
The youth of the new and returning players in addition to the four seniors currently participating on the team has the potential to combine for a very successful season. The upperclassmen will provide the team with experience, leadership and hard work due to their knowledge of the game and the amount of years they have been playing. The younger players will provide the team with a lot of energy and a willingness to learn allowing themselves to be shaped by both the coaches and their teammates. This combination of characteristics demonstrated by the seniors and underclassmen have the ability to be a lethal combination. But that is not all.
The baseball team resembles what every coach hopes for, and all players work for, a sense of collaboration. Spencer Pratt describes this collaboration by saying, “This year we have a team with real potential not only because we are a family but because all of us together make up a team that could go all the way.” The sense of unity the baseball team demonstrates allows them to push each other in practices and games to be the best players they can be. It also allows them to fight through hard games when things are not going there way because instead of getting on each other for making mistakes, they are there for each other lifting each other up. Also this mentality causes them to work together as a whole, so the team rather than the individual can succeed.
Many people might count the baseball team out due to their youth, but this youth, along with the experience of the seniors, and the team mentality will be what propels them through a successful season.

BEDFORD IS READY TO PLAY BALL
Spring is around the corner and for all the baseball fans, you know what that means, baseball season is starting up again. Baseball is an
important factor to American history, and partially changed the way we know life today. To some people baseball is just a game, a boring game
of nine innings and two teams. However, to the rest of America it is a fun and enjoyable game. For example, the varsity coach for baseball, Mr.
Chapman, loves the game of baseball. All four years of Mr. Chapman’s college career, he played baseball. Mr. Chapman is very wise when it
comes to the game, he definitely knows what he is doing. I have a feeling he is going to lead this years team all the way to home plate, at the
championship. Back at my McKelvie days, I got to know Mr. Chapman, he was my gym teacher. Not only is Mr. Chapman a great baseball
coach, but he also has a great personality. He could always make the classes laugh. It is sad to think that as this years’ freshmen are coming
in and just beginning their high school baseball career and the seniors are just finishing theirs up. However there are a bunch of talented
freshmen trying out this year, and have a lot of skills to offer. The turn out of the team this year should be interesting, and all the bulldogs should
come show their support out on the field. Like the famous Jackie Robinson said, “Baseball is like a poker game. Nobody wants to quit when he's
losing; nobody wants you to quit when you're ahead.” Bedford is going to put up a fight this year, and they are determined to win. Bedford never
backs down until the season is through.
