Girl power: bedford's freshman kicker
by bridgetwidrig'17
This year for our BHS freshman football team, Madison Lucontoni has decided to take the field as this year’s kicker. After attending Eric Glassman’s senior project football clinic last year, Madison took the players encouraging words about her kick and decided to try out. The idea of trying out for kicker also came from her soccer skills and experience.
“My coaches had me take most of my team’s corner kicks for my strength and accuracy.”, Madison says.
These qualities are important for a kicker, and Madison already had them from her soccer career. These skills put her at an advantage coming into the season.
She states, “I wanted to push myself outside my comfort zone to use my kicking skills on the football field.”
Though it was a scary decision, it has paid off.
As Madison states, “all of the coaches had open minds and recognized my ability, not as a girl, but as a kicker.”
As for the future, Madison plans on playing throughout her high school career and working on improving her skills more and more.
Though it was a risk going out for kicker, she has been playing just as hard as anyone else, boy or girl, could, saying, “sure, there’s a ponytail under my helmet, but when the whistle blows I am a football player who will give everything I have to my coaches and teammates.”
This dedication is what BHS needs on our football teams. Go support Madison Lucontoni and her team this season!
