On Friday October 16 the 51st Head of the Charles Regatta took place on the Charles river in Boston Massachusetts. Over 400,000 spectators lined the river for this renowned race. Rowers participated from approximately twenty eight different countries. Many former and current Olympians made appearances at the U.S. Rowing tent. Of the 10,160 athletes competing, fourteen were Bedford High School students.
The Bedford High School crew team had two boats participating, a men’s youth four and a women’s youth eight. To row in The Head of The Charles is a privilege many Bedford Crew rowers aspire to receive. It takes hard work both on the water and during the rigorous land workouts to be chosen for the Head of the Charles lineups.
The men’s youth four was a boat of all seniors. Alex Schwartz coxed Jake Catania, Nathan Gould, Matthew Ahnen, and Silas Johnson. Together they placed twenty second out of eighty five boats, earning the Bedford Crew team a guaranteed boat in the race for 2016. They finished with a time of eighteen minutes and four seconds.
The women’s youth eight was coxed by Mckenzie Willis. In Bedford’s boat, 03110, rowed Sydney Ford, Jona Glynn, Maya Ashooh, Emily Peach, Victoria Thibeault, Mackenzie Kearns, Elise Gauthier, and Cara Campbell. This lineup had been racing and practicing together all of Bedford Crew’s fall season. They did not place as well as they had hoped, but ended with an impressive sixty third out of eighty five finish. For the students either continuing to row for Bedford High School or moving on to row for college, they will get an opportunity to come back and compete next year.
It wasn’t just current Bedford High School students that made their mark at this year’s Head of the Charles. Bedford High School Alumni and former Bedford Crew team captain, Emily Lane, rowed for the University of New Hampshire. With a time of nineteen minutes and thirty seconds, Emily’s boat came in first out of thirty five, earning her boat gold medals.
The 2015 Head of the Charles Regatta was a successful event for both current and former Bulldogs, all of whom work tirelessly to be true contenders in such a large race. Bedford Crew will be on the water again by the spring of 2016.
