SAVE THE BEES CLUB

Recently, social media has revived a beloved but forgotten animation, the Bee Movie! This movie has been brought back to life, trending on a variety of different platforms. The millennials have revamped this forgotten children’s story, and, although it is full of laughs, its message has transpired into a campaign to prevent extinction. Here at BHS, students wanted in on the action. After watching the movie in biology, Juniors Gabby Lavoie and Kelsea Nanan were interested into looking deeper into the real dangers that were brought to life on the screen. Wanting to help the cause of bee endangerment, the girls are reaching out through the Bedford community to raise awareness.
Together, they have started the Save the Bees Club. Advised by Ms. Colburn, the club has just started and BHS students have already gathered to begin working for the bees! When asked about the group’s purpose, Co-founder Lavoie says, “Although Kelsea and I both recognize that this is a school club, and we are not going to fix the endangerment of bees with this club alone, we felt that it was something we needed to do, as any impact, no matter how small, creates change.” The club intends to spread awareness within our community and beyond. Through service projects, the group hopes to educate others of the reality of bee extinction and endangerment. They are hoping that their message will be heard and carried on through the butterfly effect, and its relevance may be made known to others.
At the first meeting, the girls spoke to those interested about the clubs goals, interests, and logistics. As the club has just started up, the group is beginning to plan for some small projects to get their message across. They are hoping to hold short and periodic meetings to ensure that the club is reachable for anyone who is interested. Plans for the future include possibly building a garden and hosting a small environmental expo for the community. The club founders are “very proud of this club already, and we can't wait to see the things we are going to accomplish!” Save the Bees Club meets the second Wednesday of every month, at 7:15 in room 204. A pop culture trend has been translated into a part of the BHS culture, and it’s time to Save the Bees!
