The Bedford High School football team came off of their Division 1 championship game appearance with multiple losses of graduating seniors. The team’s 11-2 season and general success can be heavily attributed to star quarterback Mike Vailas. After Valias graduated, big shoes were left to fill at the helm of the Bedford offense. In replacement of Vailas, sophomore Connor Robert was thrust into the all important position of quarterback, requiring him to lead the older, more experienced players on the offensive side of the ball.
So far, Robert has led his Bulldogs to a flying start this season. In Bedford’s home opener, Robert threw for two touchdowns while running for another en route to a 48-0 shutout victory over Nashua North. In the next game, a 69-27 blowout over Nashua South, the young quarterback threw for three touchdowns and tacked on another two on the ground. The most recent game, an away game at Bishop Guertin, resulted in yet another Bulldogs victory; winning 43-22, with Robert contributing three more passing touchdowns.
With only three games played, the season has hardly even begun. Still, the team looks confident even with the loss of a few key players. The older players are welcoming in Robert and trusting him to do the job.
Junior running back Nick Leahy shows his respect for the new quarterback, “Although Connor is a sophomore, he worked hard in the offseason and that has shown in the first couple games. Even though he's younger, he’s proven to be a great asset to the team.”
When asked what it was like to be the starting quarterback in the midst of older teammates, Robert responded modestly, “I’m just coming out every week to get better and the older guys on the team are great in supporting me.”
The Bedford High School football team looks to continue their season at the same pace that they have started out with. So far they sit undefeated, at 3-0. It seems that the team is truly a team not just in their victories, but in the way they support each other and perform on game day.
