Turning PAssion for a Sport into a Senior Project
By JamieSalvatore'17
What does it take to plan a field hockey clinic for younger athletes interested in the sport?
This is the question BHS senior, Morgan Joyce asked herself earlier this year while thinking of ideas for her senior project. As a coach of a U11 girls soccer team, she knew she had the experience and the knowledge to lead something on her own. Since everyone seems to start playing soccer at such a young age, she figured the same opportunities should be extended to those interested in field hockey. When she posed the idea to the girls on her team, they were all eager to learn the new sport.
Morgan has been playing for five years herself, and commented, “I knew I wanted to do something with field hockey, and my goal is to introduce it at a younger age and encourage girls to play in high school.” So far, she’s hosted two clinics: one for fifth and sixth graders, and one for seventh and eighth graders. Because of their success, she plans on following them up with a tournament in the winter for everyone that participated.
When asked if she had long term goals for her project, she explained excitedly, “I’m hoping someone will do a similar project next year, or find another way to get the kids involved!” If anyone has younger siblings interested in the sport, I highly suggest taking a look into Morgan’s upcoming tournament!
