Valentine's Day

Ah Valentine's Day, a day which many people celebrate and despise. But why is there so much hate towards the day that seemingly praises love? Valentine's Day is not the best holiday, but as I grow older it seems more pointless. To start, it’s a made up holiday by the greeting card and candy companies to increase revenue. Also, any grown man who wears a diaper and shoots people with arrows to make them fall in love is downright creepy. And with the love comes the same amount of stress. It puts pressure on many people to make perfect plans for their significant others to display their infinite love for eachother, although that should happen everyday in a relationship. About half of women said they would break up with their significant other if they did not get them anything. Also, those not in relationships tend to feel more sad and uninvolved when they see all the couples happy in love. Valentine’s Day sucks partially because all of the people who say it does. No one wants to be surrounded by sad, love-sick people whose woes have been heightened. Especially, if you’re taken and your friend isn’t. It leads to awkward encounters in which you show your friend the gifts you got while they give you a half-hearted smile and vise versa. Also, where is the originality? Proposing on Valentine’s Day is pretty much expected which takes away the surprise. Plus, February is not exactly the warmest month of the year. When you live in New England where it will be below freezing all Valentine’s Day, there is not much to do outside. To get to the more practical side, it leads to overpricing of flowers and candy, roses selling for as much as $75. Also, on the very sad side suicide rates tend to rise, heartbreak literally killing. There is one plus to this day, it gives you an excuse to stay in watching movies and eating chocolate. All in all, Valentine’s Day is not the best, but if you and a significant other keep expectations realistic, it won’t suck as bad. :)
